A night of normalcy was all Ila wanted. A night where her familiarity to her husband was not a constant weight hanging heavy above her. And so, that's what Idris wanted to gift her. Living out that dangerous fantasy presents itself as an invitation to a masquerade ball, and Ila slips her father her plus-one invite under two conditions.

The first: the moment they don the masks, they are strangers. Without name, identity, or blood between them. The second: they must have at least one other partner before they can mingle with each other. It's only fair, after all. A Songbird for the Stag, and a Wolf for the Doe.

Yet, they are kindred lovers in a crowd. Mates with a multitude of mismatched masks between them. Of course they eventually have eyes for only one another. That was the the ultimate endpoint of their game, after all: a night where they could come together and share intimacy as only strangers in a crowd can...

I do think I'd like to write a small short story for this piece when I'm not eyeball deep in editing a novel for the second time, but I think that would stay pretty much exclusive to my Newsletter and my Subscribestar, haha. I'd like to try that out because writing the short, painting a whole cover for a 6k to 18k story, and then writing a smaller free thing to point people toward buying the short story, is exhausting and does little to net me any kind of compensation that feels worth it long-term.
